The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Evolution of Close Galaxy Pairs and Major-merger Rates Up
We derive the close, kinematic pair fraction and merger rate up to redshift z ∼ 1.2 from the initial data of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. Assuming mild luminosity evolution, the number of companions per luminous galaxy is found to evolve as (1+z), with m = 0.51±0.28; assuming no evolution, m = 1.60±0.29. Our results imply that only 9% of present-day L∗ galaxies have undergone major mergers since ...

متن کاملNIR Luminosity Function of Galaxies in Close Major-Merger Pairs and Mass Dependence of Merger Rate
A sample of close major-merger pairs (projected separation 5 ≤ r ≤ 20h kpc, Ks band magnitude difference δKs ≤ 1 mag) is selected from the matched 2MASS-2dFGRS catalog of Cole et al. (2001). The pair primaries are brighter than Ks = 12.5 mag. After corrections for various biases, the comparison between counts in the paired galaxy sample and counts in the parent sample shows that for the local ‘...
متن کامل2MASS/SDSS Close Major-Merger Galaxy Pairs: Luminosity Functions and Merger Mass Dependence
We select a close “major-merger candidate” galaxy pair sample in order to calculate the Ks luminosity function (LF) and pair fraction representative of the merger/interaction component of galaxy evolution in the local universe. The pair sample (projected separation 5 h kpc ≤ r ≤ 20 h kpc, Ks-band magnitude difference ∆Ks ≤ 1 mag) is selected by combining the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) wi...
متن کاملNew Techniques for Relating Dynamically Close Galaxy Pairs to Merger and Accretion Rates : Application to the Ssrs2 Redshift Survey
The galaxy merger and accretion rates, and their evolution with time, provide important tests for models of galaxy formation and evolution. Close pairs of galaxies are the best available means of measuring redshift evolution in these quantities. In this study, we introduce two new pair statistics, which relate close pairs to the merger and accretion rates. We demonstrate the importance of corre...
